How much does a custom Chrome extension cost in 2026?

"What would my extension idea cost?" — I get this message weekly, so here's the pricing transparency almost nobody in this niche publishes. Real ranges, real factors, from shipping dozens of client extensions on the Chrome Web Store.

The short answer

  • $300–800 — a focused single-purpose tool (one site, one job: a data capture button, a form filler, a price watcher).
  • $800–2,500 — multi-site or multi-step tools: scraping with export, API integrations, team dashboards, auth.
  • $2,500–10,000+ — products: accounts, subscription checks, background sync, admin panels, publishing support.

Most business extensions my clients need land in the middle band. A fixed quote after a 30-minute scoping call beats every estimate range.

What actually moves the price

1. How many sites it touches

One site with stable markup is cheap. Ten sites whose layouts change is a maintenance contract — budget for it honestly.

2. Where the data goes

Display-only is the floor. Export to Sheets adds a bit. A sync with your CRM/API/auth adds the most — every external system is design, error handling and testing.

3. Manifest V3 realities

Service workers sleep, remote code is banned, and broad host permissions trigger longer store reviews. Good MV3 architecture is a known engineering problem — but it's real engineering, not an afternoon.

4. Distribution

Private/unlisted Web Store publication for a team is quick. Public listing needs store assets, a privacy policy and review patience (days to weeks).

The hidden costs nobody quotes you

  • Chrome updates: APIs deprecate; plan a small yearly maintenance budget.
  • Site redesigns: scrapers break; robust selectors and monitoring reduce surprise fixes.
  • Store re-reviews: every substantive update goes through review again.

Build vs. buy

If an off-the-shelf tool does 90% of the job, buy it — I'll tell you. Custom pays off when the workflow is specific to your business, the data is sensitive, or the SaaS quote is per-seat forever. Run your own numbers: the calculator on my homepage does the 3-year math in ten seconds.

Want a real number? Send me the workflow — fixed quote, no hourly meter, and the scoping call is free.
